Severely damaged or decayed teeth can negatively impact on your overall dental structure and where left untreated, initial problems can lead to a wealth of further issues, including gum disease, tooth breakage and even tooth-loss.
Used as a highly effective means of restoring damaged teeth, crowns and bridges can be an extremely successful treatment at Dental Pearls, and can prove to be of great benefit in preventing teeth from additional weakening after damage.
A crown is one of the most effective procedural options available when attempting to save a tooth which is in need of added strength and security. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials to suit including gold, porcelain (combined with a strengthening metal) or pure ceramic porcelain. In each case, the material used is composed in a way which enables high durability and where ceramic materials such as porcelain are used, the effect is overwhelmingly natural in appearance.
Constructed like a cap, the crown serves to protect the underlying surface and structure of the tooth and is often used following root canal treatments.
Where root canal treatment has been been conducted to save teeth which have suffered from excessive decay, the placement of a crown allows for additional protection to the treated tooth, following inevitable weakening.
In more severe cases, we can provide additional treatment for tooth loss and damage, by employing the use of a bridge in conjunction with a crown.
A bridge restores an area of missing tooth or multiple teeth, by ‘bridging’ the gap with an artificial replacement, composed from the same material as that of a crown.
For placement of the bridge, a crown is employed as a supporting feature and positioned on the teeth either side of the area of tooth loss. This acts to stabilise and anchor the bridge in place, and the overall process subsequently closes the gap.
As with crowns, bridges are designed to complement your tooth’s natural colour and composition, are less invasive and easier to complete than dental implants and often prove more comfortable than dentures.
