Keeping your mouth hygienic and presentable not only allows you to look your best, but offers the benefit of consistent good health. If your oral health is neglected, the resulting development of issues to the gums and teeth can emerge in the form of ‘periodontal disease’ or ‘gum disease’, often resulting in serious health problems.
Periodontal gum disease is an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial infection in the gums. It is also one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults. Periodontal disease separates the gums from the teeth, forming pockets which harbour bacteria and subsequently, become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen causing further deterioration of the gum tissue and bone. If this bacterial infection is not removed from the teeth, the gums will begin to recede and this can result in tooth loss.
Often, this destructive process has very mild symptoms and many do not realise that persistent sore, swollen, red or bleeding gums as well as sensitivity and bad breath are all signs of periodontal disease.
Here at Dental Pearls, we have the expertise and facilities to provide proper management and treatment of periodontal gum disease. Gum treatment can consist of one or more procedures, depending on the severity of the individual case.
Scaling and root planning are common, non-surgical treatments for periodontal disease. During your treatment, Dr Khatri will remove the bacteria and infection from the unhealthy deep pockets around the teeth below the gum line. The root is then planed or smoothed, eliminating any coarse areas on the root, which can easily trap plaque and bacteria. Scaling and Root Planning creates a healthy environment, allowing the gums to heal naturally and reattach to the tooth.
With the help of Dr Khatri and a continued effort to maintain teeth and gum health on a daily basis, we can help you maintain your natural smile, for now and into the future.
